Hiking in Vajsön

Show map

Norsjö residents have a fantastic birds' lake on their doorstep. The association "Vajsjön's Friends" protect the lake as an outing destination and valuable bird lake.

In 2017 a LONA project was completed which allowed the association to make the hiking trail around Vajsjön available, with upgraded footbridges and picnic areas.

A lake with fascinating history
Vajsjön was previously part of the Norsjön Lake. At the end of the 19th century, the lake was lowered to increase the yield at the turn, and so Vajsjön was formed. According to old documents, the annual yield was 2000 scales hay. It is equivalent to 400 tonnes in today's measure. When the haymaking ended in the 1940s, the wetlands began to grow again, and the bottom of the lake is today much smaller than the surface.

Vajsjön's birds
The best time for a visit at Vajsjön is in the spring when the ice is still there and melting water floods the grass beaches. Common scoter, bean goose, whimbrel, spotted redshank and sometimes narrow-knocked puffins rest on the lake during their journey up to the mountains. Mallard, bluebell, teal and garganey are annual breeders there. The latest bird survey shows the rich bird life in Vajsjön. It is unique to a lake so far north and into the country.
